Skype a Scientist Program

The Skype a Scientist Program aims to connect scientists with classrooms (and more) across the globe. Mariah has volunteered to be matched with classrooms via this program since 2019. This program is important to Mariah as it allows students from rural communities to connect with scientists and learn what they are doing. As an engineer who comes from rural Maine, she wishes this program was around when she was younger! Mariah has had the opportunity to meet with a range of students from 2nd to 11th grade.

The following video is intended for those from the 3-12 grade audience. Some of the images were created using BioRender. This is an educational video that can be watch in class before meeting with Mariah for a Skype a Scientist visit if deisered.

Accessible Meeting Materials

Adding captioning to Zoom will increase the accessibility of the meeting for those who are deaf, have an auditory processing disorder, or other disabled. It is important to enact zoom captioning without prompting so that disabled people do not have to “out” themselves to everyone. Disclosing a disability status is a personal choice. Mariah has put together a document on how to add closed captioning on Zoom!
